Reference HHK001 · 43mm stainless steel · Caliber 8T61 quartz chronograph · Limited to 3,000 pieces worldwide · $540 · Authorized Seiko dealer in Miami
Ask any watch enthusiast what a "panda dial" is and you will get the same answer: a white chronograph dial with two black subdials. It is one of the most recognizable looks in watchmaking, made famous by racing chronographs from the 1960s and still one of the most requested dial styles today. The name always worked as a loose comparison. The black registers on a white face looked a little like a panda's eye patches, if you squinted.
Seiko stopped squinting. The Seiko Power Design Project HHK001 takes the panda dial and finishes the drawing. The black subdials are now tilted and shaped like real eye patches. A small nose and mouth appear near six o'clock. The pushers at the top of the case become round black ears. The hands are bamboo leaves, the tachymeter is named after bamboo, and the caseback shows the panda from behind, tail included.
The HHK001 is the original colorway of the concept, finished in the black and white of an adult giant panda. It sits alongside the pink Seiko HHK002 Pink Panda, and together the two form Seiko Power Design Project Collection 2. Seiko is producing 3,000 pieces of the HHK001 for the entire world.
On this page you will find everything a U.S. buyer needs before ordering: Seiko's official specifications, how the watch is built, how it wears, how it compares with the pink version and other Seiko chronographs, and why buying from an authorized dealer matters for a limited release.
Seiko's story starts in 1881, when Kintaro Hattori opened a shop in Tokyo selling and repairing watches and clocks. The company soon began making its own clocks and, in 1913, built Japan's first wristwatch. Seiko changed the global industry in 1969 with the Quartz Astron, the first quartz wristwatch ever sold. Today it is one of very few watchmakers that design and manufacture nearly every part of a watch themselves, from movements to dials to crystals.
Timing has always been central to Seiko. The brand served as official timekeeper at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and released Japan's first wrist chronograph that same year. In 1969 it introduced one of the world's first automatic chronographs. Modern Seiko chronographs span everything from accessible Essentials models to the Prospex Speedtimer line, where panda-style dials are a recurring favorite. The HHK001 is a direct descendant of that tradition, viewed through a designer's sense of humor.
Launched in 2001, the Power Design Project gives Seiko's in-house designers the freedom to work on ideas that have nothing to do with their regular assignments. These concepts are usually built as one-off pieces for exhibitions and never sold. In 2024, the program staged the "Incredibly Specialized Watch Exhibition," where each designer created a watch for a very specific audience. Kiyotaka Sakai chose panda lovers and asked whether a panda chronograph could actually resemble a panda.
His white-and-black "Pandagraph" concept was one of the most talked-about watches in the exhibition. Seiko turned it into a production watch for 2026, adding the pink HHK002 as a second color. Collection 2 follows Collection 1 from 2025, which brought back Seiko's 1984 Tissé design. For a side-by-side overview of both panda models, see our article on the Seiko Power Design Project HHK001 and HHK002 panda chronographs.
Each feature on the HHK001 serves two purposes: it works as part of a chronograph, and it adds to the picture of a panda.
The white-and-black palette is what makes the panda reference land instantly. Watch collectors see a classic panda chronograph first, then notice the ears, the nose and the bamboo hands. Non-collectors simply see a panda. That double reading is the core of the design, and the HHK001 delivers it most clearly.
The HHK001 is the faithful production version of an exhibition concept by a named Seiko designer. It belongs to a small, numbered series of Power Design Project collections, and only 3,000 will exist. Pieces like this tend to become talking points in a collection because their backstory is easy to tell and hard to repeat.
Black and white goes with nearly everything. The HHK001 is easier to match with everyday clothing than most novelty watches, from denim and sweaters to a casual blazer. It is playful without clashing with the rest of your outfit.
The 8T61 quartz movement keeps time to about one second per day and runs for roughly three years on a battery. There is no winding, no setting after a weekend off the wrist, and no need for a watch winder. Pick it up and it is ready.
Behind the illustration is a proper chronograph. Use it to time a run, a presentation, a steak on the grill or a lap at the go-kart track, measured in fifths of a second for up to an hour.
Gifts that make people laugh and then keep wearing them are rare. The HHK001 fits birthdays, graduations, anniversaries and holiday giving, especially for anyone who loves pandas, Japanese design or watches with a story.
All specifications come from Seiko's official U.S. product page for the HHK001 and match the live Lexor Miami listing.

The 43mm case is stainless steel, finished with brushed flat surfaces and polished edges. That contrast gives the rounded case shape some structure and keeps it from looking like a toy. Stainless steel holds up to daily wear, resists corrosion and can be refreshed by a watchmaker if it picks up scratches over the years.
Seiko's proprietary Hardlex crystal covers the dial. It is tougher than standard mineral glass and less likely to shatter on impact than sapphire, which suits a casual watch that will see real life. Sapphire is more scratch-resistant, so keep the HHK001 away from rough stone, concrete and keys in the same pocket.
The strap is 20mm wide and made of white cowhide leather with darker contrasting details that continue the black-and-white theme. The original 2024 concept used furry keepers. The production version replaces them with suede-like accents near the tip and keeper, so you get the texture reference without fur to maintain. A stainless steel pin buckle secures it. White leather shows wear faster than dark colors, so keeping a spare 20mm strap for rough days is a smart idea.
The HHK001 comes in a dedicated limited-edition box with a black exterior and a green interior, a color that naturally recalls bamboo. Keep the box, warranty card and paperwork together: a complete set matters to collectors if you ever decide to pass the watch on.
The case is a soft cushion shape rather than a traditional round chronograph case, and it reads as the outline of a panda's head. Seiko used a bullhead layout, moving the crown and both chronograph pushers to the top of the case. The two pushers are rounded, recessed and black, sitting exactly where a panda's ears would be. Once you notice it, you cannot see the watch any other way.
On a regular panda chronograph, the subdials are round and placed for legibility. On the HHK001, they are angled and shaped like the drooping black patches around a giant panda's eyes. Near six o'clock, Seiko adds a small nose and mouth. The white dial carries an embossed radial texture meant to suggest fur, which also catches the light and adds depth to an otherwise clean color scheme.
The hour and minute hands are drawn as bamboo leaves. Giant pandas spend most of their day eating bamboo, so the hands literally point to the panda's favorite meal every minute of the day.
Instead of printing "tachymeter," Seiko called the scale the "Sasameter," from the Japanese word sasa for bamboo grass. The scale also references a panda's estimated top running speed of about 30 km/h. It still works exactly like a tachymeter: start the chronograph at a marker, stop it after a known distance, and read average speed off the scale.
The back of the case shows the panda from behind, with a sculpted three-dimensional tail and a "LIMITED EDITION" marking. It is a detail most owners will show off just as often as the dial.
The HHK001 is the colorway Kiyotaka Sakai originally designed. The pink HHK002 was added later to represent a newborn panda cub. If you want the watch exactly as it appeared at the exhibition, and the version that connects most directly to traditional panda chronographs, the HHK001 is the one to choose.
Inside the HHK001 is the Seiko Caliber 8T61, an in-house quartz chronograph movement. Seiko rates it at ±15 seconds per month, roughly one second per day, which is far tighter than the typical daily variation of a mechanical watch. The battery lasts approximately three years under normal use.
The chronograph records elapsed time up to 60 minutes in 1/5-second increments. Use one "ear" to start and stop timing and the other to reset. Running seconds appear on the small seconds hand, separate from the chronograph, so you can always confirm the watch is working at a glance. Seiko publishes a free 8T61 instruction manual if you want step-by-step setting and reset procedures.
Smartphones, laptop lids, speakers and handbag clasps all produce magnetic fields. The HHK001 resists magnetism up to 4,800 A/m, Seiko's standard rating for everyday watches, which keeps it accurate in normal home and office environments.
Seiko USA rates the HHK001 as splash resistant. Some international reviews mention a 3 bar rating, but U.S. buyers should follow Seiko USA's official classification: rain and hand washing are fine, while swimming, showering and bathing are not. The white leather strap will also last much longer if it stays dry.
If you already love panda dials, the HHK001 is the most entertaining interpretation of the style you can buy from a major brand. It honors the look while poking fun at the nickname.
Power Design Project concepts almost never reach production. Owning one of 3,000 HHK001 watches adds a rare, design-led piece to a collection of Prospex divers, Presage dress watches or King Seiko models.
From zoo enthusiasts to people who simply find pandas irresistible, the HHK001 is a wearable tribute that still functions as a serious watch.
Many novelty watches are loud in color. The HHK001's black and white is the most wearable palette in the world, so it fits into more outfits and more settings than you might expect from a playful design.
At $540, with a special box and a limited production run, the HHK001 is a memorable present that feels considered rather than generic.
A 43mm diameter sounds large, but the number that matters most for fit is lug-to-lug length. At 44.1mm, the HHK001 is relatively compact from end to end, because the cushion case keeps the lugs short. On wrists around 6.5 inches and up, it sits comfortably without overhanging. On smaller wrists it reads as a bold statement piece, which suits the design. The 14.6mm thickness means it sits proud of the wrist, so it is best worn with short sleeves or relaxed cuffs rather than a tight dress shirt.
If you need serious water resistance, a mechanical movement or a slim dress watch, look elsewhere. Our Seiko watches collection and the Seiko Luxe collection include automatics, divers and dress pieces. For a vintage-inspired automatic, the Seiko Presage Style60's SSK009 is a strong alternative.

Mechanically and dimensionally, the two are identical: same 43mm case, same 8T61 movement, same Sasameter, same price. The choice is about color and rarity. The HHK001 is the original white-and-black design and the most direct tribute to classic panda chronographs, with 3,000 pieces made. The HHK002 is pink, inspired by newborn panda cubs, with only 2,000 pieces. Choose the HHK001 for versatility and authenticity to the concept; choose the HHK002 for color and the lower production number. Many collectors are buying both as a pair.
The Seiko Essentials SSB481 is the sensible choice for a do-everything chronograph on a budget. The HHK001 costs about $90 more but adds a limited production run, a designer concept, a sculpted caseback and a special box. If personality matters as much as function, the HHK001 offers far more for a small difference in price.
Seiko's Prospex Speedtimer models offer panda dials in a more traditional sports format, with solar or mechanical movements and better water resistance. They are serious tool watches. The HHK001 is a design piece built on the same visual tradition, aimed at people who want character and rarity. If you want light-powered timing, look at the SFJ007 or browse our limited edition watches.
Modern luxury values individuality. A watch that reflects your sense of humor and taste says more than one chosen only for its logo. The HHK001 hits that note with a palette that works almost anywhere.
Black and white clothing lets the HHK001 tie a whole look together. Think a black crewneck with white sneakers, or a white shirt with black trousers. The watch becomes the finishing detail.
For warm weather, pair it with a linen shirt, chinos and loafers. The white strap looks fresh in summer and keeps the look light.
In design, tech, media and hospitality, a watch with a clever story is a natural conversation starter in meetings and at events.
Match the HHK001 with a pair of black acetate sunglasses or silver accessories for a coordinated monochrome style. Lexor Miami's designer eyewear makes it easy to build the full look in one visit.
Wipe the case and crystal with a dry microfiber cloth. Keep the white strap away from water, perfume, sunscreen and dark denim, which can transfer dye. Store the watch in its box when not in use, and have the battery replaced by an authorized Seiko service provider so the case stays properly sealed.
The Seiko HHK001 is a limited-edition quartz chronograph from Seiko Power Design Project Collection 2. Its white-and-black dial looks like a giant panda's face, with black subdials as eyes, ear-shaped pushers, bamboo-leaf hands and a sculpted panda caseback.
Seiko's official U.S. price for the HHK001 is $540. Lexor Miami sells it for $540 with free shipping to the 48 contiguous United States.
Seiko is producing 3,000 HHK001 watches worldwide. The pink HHK002 is limited to 2,000 pieces.
The caseback is marked "LIMITED EDITION." Seiko's official release information states that the Collection 2 watches are not individually numbered.
Seiko lists the HHK001 as a November 2026 release. Contact Lexor Miami to reserve one before stock arrives.
The HHK001 uses Seiko's Caliber 8T61 quartz chronograph, accurate to ±15 seconds per month with about three years of battery life, a small seconds hand and a 60-minute chronograph in 1/5-second increments.
It measures 43.0mm in diameter, 14.6mm thick and 44.1mm lug-to-lug, with a 20mm strap width.
No. Seiko USA rates the HHK001 as splash resistant, which covers rain and hand washing but not swimming, showering or bathing.
"Panda" is the collector nickname for a white chronograph dial with black subdials. The HHK001 takes the name literally, adding ears, a nose, a mouth, bamboo-leaf hands and a panda tail on the caseback.
"Sasa" is Japanese for bamboo grass. The Sasameter is Seiko's name for the HHK001's tachymeter scale, which references a panda's estimated top speed of about 30 km/h and works like a standard tachymeter.
Both share the same case, movement and $540 price. Choose the HHK001 for the original white-and-black design and easier everyday matching, or the pink HHK002 for color and its smaller 2,000-piece run.
Seiko lists it as unisex. The 43mm case has a bold presence that suits anyone who likes a larger watch.
Yes. Buying from an authorized Seiko dealer like Lexor Miami gives you Seiko's 3-year warranty.

The Seiko HHK001 does something few watches manage: it makes watch collectors and non-collectors smile for the same reason. As the original colorway of Kiyotaka Sakai's concept, limited to 3,000 pieces and priced at $540, the HHK001 is one of the most memorable and wearable limited editions of 2026.
